Recycle Old Cell Phones

Church Women United has joined with the Women's Funding Network and Good Deed Foundation in a national cell phone recycling program that will fund grassroots programs that lift women and families out of poverty. One hundred thirty million cell phones and PDAs will be retired this year in the United States. Fewer that 10% are likely to be recycled.. The goal is to recycle one million cell phones. There is a box in Fellowship Hall in which you may place your old cell phone. You may also recycle the chargers. If you don't hae a cell phone, call your grandchildren! they up-grade their phones every year. The sooner our box is full of recycled phones the sooner we can mail it in order to help women and families.

World Thank Offering

At the November 6th meeting of United Methodist Women, members will be bringing a World Thank Offering. The offering gives individuals the opportunity to share a portion of God's blessings with others. Women are encouraged to use a container for regular thank offering gift. Money put in World Thank Offering containers is a symbol of gratitude for daily blessings from God. Gratitude is not an optional response for a Christian. Funds collected are used in the total program of mission of the Women's Division - missions in the United States and around the world. The Bible challenges us to give thanks daily for all God has done and is doing for us. Even if you have not used a container, please bring an offering to the November 6sth meeting which begins at 1 p.m. See you there!

The Mission Committee is concentrating on school kits - we are going to get some help from the Sunday school on these, Layettes and Birthing kits.   The list of items needed for kits was in the last Bell, so please look that over!   The Birthing kit has items that will be bought in larger quantities and then divided up, so we are only asking for $ at this time for those.   Money would be welcome for any and all kits so we can shop for you if you wish!!  Kits range from $10 - $20.  Watch for more information!!

Food Collection Sunday

One of our lessons in Sunday School talked about helping others. Kids can help too!    This will start a special mission project on Sunday mornings of Food Collection Sunday.  The last Sunday of every month will become Food Sunday and members of the congregation will be invited to bring items to church and kids during the children time can go to them and bring them forward.   This is a tangible way to show how we all can help – and Kids can Help Too!

Thank you to local volunteers!!!
On behalf of the Mission Committee and the church we want to thank all of
those people who give so willingly and freely of their time to the MANY
projects in the Des Moines area: DMARC, Bidwell, Trinity UMC, Children
Family Urban Ministries, Breakfast Club, etc., etc.!! There isn't a way to
report these hours officially to the conference, but we know and appreciate
all that you do!!! If all told, there are probably THOUSANDS OF HOURS
donated for the work of Christ in our community! Thank you for showing the
love of God to others and being a witness!!

Nothing But Nets!
Last year we helped Iowa send $5000 for 500 nets to Nigeria!   The Bishop there tells us that those nets as well as others have reduced the child mortality rate by 50% from malaria!   We are making a real difference.   As you may remember, this project was started by Coach Phil Jackson and people from all over have been contributing and it is also one of our General Conference projects.    As you fight off those pesky mosquitoes this summer, remember those that have no way to keep them off, especially at night and need some protection!!  Thank you!
